The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is selected by public voters who believe that their favorite athlete should take home the award. This awards ceremony is held annually in December, typically after the sports seasons have come to a close. After looking over each contender and determining who is worthy of the award, the public takes to voting and the winner is selected over live television broadcast. This professional track and road racing cyclist took home an amazing four gold medals in the 2012 Olympics. He was also the winner of the 2012 Tour de France, an outstanding achievement for the British.

Cycling is not the only sport that the British excelled in during the Olympic games. Andrew Murray, a professional Scottish tennis player, took home the gold in the men’s singles during the Olympics. In addition to his gold medal win, Murray was also awarded the silver medal in the mixed doubles. This athlete currently comes in fourth place as one of the best tennis players in the world.

Determining the Winner
The BBC Sports Personality Of The Year is determined by a public vote that is shown on television. Contenders do not know in advance who is going to win. Before voting, the public can go online and make bets on who they think will win the title. Votes are then tallied the winner is awarded the silver camera for all to see.
